A graveside funeral service for Loretta Lou Atchley, 88, will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, July 3, 2024 in the Fairlawn Cemetery with Kim Hayes officiating.

Loretta Atchley was born Loretta Lou Burton February 19, 1936 in Walters, Oklahoma. She passed from this life on June 27, 2024 in Midwest City.

Loretta was the third child of five born to Martin Huston Burton and Letha “Irene” (Allen) Burton. They lived in Walters from 1936 to 1939, then moved to Altus.

She went to Altus High School graduating in 1954.

In 1956, she met Byron Leroy Atchley and they were married one year later and had three children, Scot Dean, Tammy Kathryn, and Gregary Lynn. They celebrated their 48th Anniversary before he passed away in 2004.

Aside from being a fulltime “Mom,” Loretta worked in retail for several locally owned drug stores as a sales clerk in Clinton, Shawnee, and Chickasha. She also worked at the JC Penney Store in Chickasha, retiring in 1992.

Loretta was very active in church, community, the “Red Hat Ladies” and social activities. She loved to bake and her pastries and bread were always popular on holidays and special occasions. She enjoyed dancing and would never turn down the opportunity to get together when Margaritas were involved.

She was a good, thoughtful, hardworking and loving woman. She had great devotion, love, service and sense of humor. Apples and Flowers always brought a smile to her face. She believed in family, faith, independence and compassion. She would always say these cherished words, “don’t worry, everything will be alright.”

Loretta was preceded in death by both parents, her husband Byron, sister, Inavelle “Ina” McElwain, and brother Martin Burton.

Loved ones left to remember her are her children Scot Atchley with wife Janita of Del City, Tammy Chastain with husband David of Elgin, Greg Atchley with wife Sasinan of La Vista, Nebraska; sisters Jeanell “Nell” Rock of Arkansas and Rosalie “Rosie” Griffin of Colorado; six grandchildren Keith with wife Denise, Brock with wife Rachel, Lance with wife Kelly, Tina, Brittany with husband Ty, and Brandon with wife Mariah; 13 great-grandchildren Adeline, Kaiden, James, David, Anna, Trae, Zackary, Ashley, Eli, Isaiah, Tyleigh, Byron, and Tayven; many nieces and nephews and other extended family.

A visitation with the family present to receive friends will be held at Ferguson Funeral Home on Tuesday, July 2nd from 4:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m.

The interment will be under the direction of Ferguson Funeral Home.
