Don Paul “Oozzie” Nelson was born in Chickasha, Oklahoma on March 23, 1947, the son of Ezell Pike Nelson and Clarice Gladys Abbott Nelson. He died Saturday, April 25, 2015 in Chickasha, Oklahoma.
After graduating from Amber-Pocasset High School in 1965, Oozzie attended Oklahoma State University. He then entered the Oklahoma National Guard, after which he came home to the family farm in Amber to start a professional dozer service as well as managing the farm and running cattle. In 1979, he and his brother, Bill, started Chickasha Sod & Grass Farm, from which they retired in 2014.
In 1969, he married Irene Elizabeth Kirby and from this union Natalie and Zac Nelson were born.
Oozzie married Judy Hart on April 21, 2000 in Chickasha, Oklahoma and to their union Hugh Hart Nelson was born.
He loved his family and friends and always had time for a story. Each time his stories were told they seemed to evolve. His favorite place was his home by the river, spending time with his family and extended family, including the horses and dogs.
Oozzie was preceded in death by his parents, his brother, Abbott Nelson, and his son, Zac Quinton Nelson.
He leaves behind his wife, Judy Nelson of the home; daughter, Natalie Nelson of Cherokee; son, Hugh Hart Nelson of the home; sister, Ezell Potter and husband, Jerry of Edmond; three brothers, Jack Nelson and wife, Susan of Bryan, Texas, Bill Nelson and wife, Lynita of Amber, John Nelson and wife, Charlotte of Chickasha; and many nieces, nephews and other extended family and friends.
The casket will be open at the funeral home, but will be closed at the funeral service.

I am so sorry Judy for your loss. Oozzie was a good man and always had a smile on his face. I dont know if he ever met a stranger, but if he did I know he treated them same as everyone else. Those are two of the things I think about when I think of Oozzie Nelson. He will be truly missed.

I am going to miss seeing Oozie around but especially at basketball games where he would keep me spellbound and entertained at the level of knowledge he had at just about any topic. Oozie never called me by my first name-just “Coach” as I had the privilege to coach his son Hugh in Y basketball for many years….that always put a smile on my face!! Enjoy paradise my friend!!

My deepest sympathy to the family. Oozzie and I were roommates at OSU and later he was my Best Man at my wedding. Obviously I knew him very well then and regret we did not stay in touch as I treasured our friendship, experiences and perhaps was with him in some of his “stories”. Several years ago we had lunch together and I never saw him so happy because of his family and living on the river. I am so sad for your loss but so glad Oozzie was part of my life.
